It’s generally regarded as a good thing when you’re immersed in whatever you’re reading. The whole outside world around you becomes distant; you forget it’s even there as your eyes glide over paragraphs and panels. You have become a part of this new world at your hands, a silent spectator in humorous, dramatic, or fantastical events.
Until, suddenly, a character breaks the fourth wall. Looking straight into your eyes, he acknowledges you and your world, perhaps humorously. You’re left all but stunned. Was that really necessary? Really?
